WIND
The UK has more usable wind power that any other European country, in fact we have 40% of this free power and only use 0.5%.
The wind comes mainly from the Polar maritime air masses that arrive here via the Atlantic. Generally this comes from the West or North West. How much energy the wind can harness depends on the atmospheric pressure, the temperature and the humidity of the air both from the Polar and other air masses.
The wind is strongest on the coast and particularly in the West together with the top of mountains. This is because the coastal wind is not affected by the drag and turbulence as over land.
The seasons also play a large part in the wind speeds as do gusts and lulls. They are strongest in the winter and at night in comparison to the summer and daytime.
In the UK Scotland has the highest average wind speed but is very slow to harness this free resource in comparison to its European neighbours
